On the 5th June 2021, Nigerians were caught by surprise when the Federal Government of Nigeria placed an indefinite suspension on micro blogging site, Twitter. For some Nigerians who used Twitter for their daily business were not fazed by the news continued using Twitter by connecting to a Virtual Private Network. This news came shortly after President Mohammadu Buhari made a post about teaching terrorist or groups that cause unrest in Nigeria in a 'language they understand'.
Not long after the announcement of the ban, the Attorney General, Justice Abubakar Malami passed the bill that anyone caught using an alternating means to access Twitter would be prosecuted by the law and would see the wrath of the law that the platform allowed promoted several violating acts such as sexual abuse, violence and the spread of fake news.
After being dragged to court by top human right activist and lawyer, Inibehe Effiong, the Attorney General, Justice Abubakar Malami said in defence to the Federal Government order at the Federal high court that they've not stopped Nigerians from accessing Twitter and that Nigerians are still using it on a daily basis.
The Federal Government through the Attorney General also mentioned that Twitter is to be blamed for the ban adding that it didn't make ant effort in punishing its offenders and didn't obey the national law.
He also added that the ban would be lifted if they register as a member of the NBC and the Corporate Affairs Commission.
